Open the whole back of your house.
Bifold doors have become the defining feature of the modern London home. That shift is not just aesthetic. Bifold doors bring in more light, open up more space, and connect the house to the garden in a way that older door types simply cannot match. They suit the way people actually use their homes now, open plan, indoor-outdoor, light-filled. And with modern aluminium systems, they are thermally efficient, secure, and practically maintenance-free.
A bifold door is an external door made up of multiple panels that fold back like a concertina. When you open it, the panels stack neatly to one side or split and stack to both sides, leaving a wide, clear opening.
Most aluminium bifold doors can open up to 90% of the total frame width. That means a 4-metre opening becomes almost entirely clear glass when the doors are folded back. No panel in the way. No obstruction between the house and the garden.
Bifold doors are most commonly fitted at the rear of the house, opening up a kitchen, dining room, or living room to a garden, terrace, or side return.
A sliding door gives more glass when closed and a cleaner view year-round. A bifold door gives a wider open aperture in summer – up to 90% of the frame width opens, compared to around 50% on a sliding door. If maximum opening for summer entertaining is the priority, bifolds are the better choice.
French doors open outward on hinges and suit narrower openings, typically up to around 1.8 metres. Bifold doors suit much wider openings and give significantly more ventilation and light.
A standard double glazed patio door has one fixed panel and one sliding panel. A bifold door folds the whole opening away. For anyone wanting to genuinely connect the house to the garden, rather than just access it, bifolds give a far more open result.
A pivot door is a single large panel that rotates on a pivot point, typically used as a front door statement piece. Bifold doors are the practical rear door choice where you want a wide opening across a large rear elevation.
Aluminium is the most popular material for bifold doors in the UK:
aluminium holds large glass panels in a narrow profile. Sightlines on premium systems start from around 80mm. That is considerably less frame than timber or uPVC.
Aluminium is strong enough to carry heavy, toughened glass panels without the frame flexing or sagging over time.
Powder-coat finishes do not peel, warp or need repainting. They last decades with no real attention.
All modern aluminium bifold doors are thermally broken. A polyamide strip separates the inner and outer aluminium sections, stopping cold from transferring through the frame.
Aluminium bifold doors are fitted with PAS 24 multipoint locking, shoot bolts top and bottom, and Secured by Design compatible hardware as standard.
Aluminium bifold doors can be made to almost any size. Most systems handle panel widths up to 1,200mm and heights up to 3,000mm.

I've worked in housing for 30 years and everything I experienced about Citi Homes is best in class. From first contact, communication was quick, clear and high quality. Quotes arrived quickly with high quality cad drawings. Once the detailed design was agreed, a delivery and installation date was agreed and then met. The operatives who fitted all eight windows in two days (bearing in mind the new windows were a completely different design to the ones removed) were polite, extremely conscientious about minimising any damage, very professional, clean and tidy. The result is a great product, perfectly and quickly installed. I have been recommending this company to friends and colleagues. If you need new high quality windows, at a highly competitive price, look no further. I would always recommend getting two or three estimates, but I honestly think that would be for reassurance rather than as a serious competitor to Citi Homes.Posted on thomas humphriesTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Citi Homes supplied new Rationel windows for our loft conversion. Great service throughout - good support through the quotation / ordering process and excellent communication on delivery times etc once the order was placed.Posted on Justin EarreyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Citi replaced my damaged Velfac balcony door: Great communication from Linas who managed to source a replacement from the manufacturers, even though the door is no longer produced. The install team also did a great job delivering and troubleshooting on site to ensure the door was replaced and now fully usable. Highly recommend.Posted on Mary ThumTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Citi supplied a very large (2 metres X 2 metres) window to replace one that had shattered. The job involved craning the new unit up to our fourth-floor terrace and fixing it in position. Citi found a very good crane company to do the lift and dealt with our local council to get the necessary license to close the street during the work. We found Linas, the Citi manager who ran our job, to be very professional and easy to work with.Posted on dermot hayesTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I spent an enormous amount of time researching doors and windows. I wanted triple glazed, thin elegant frames, affordability and value for money. I searched the net and contacted very many companies; some looked very good indeed apart from the affordability and some were not worth bothering about. I contacted Velfac UK who I had heard were very good and they put me on to Citi Homes Windows who handle their products. We went to visit the Citi Homes showroom and they were fantastic. Over a cup of tea we discussed with them what we wanted and they showed me frames that exactly fitted the brief. They were able to give me an estimate on the spot, based on approximate sizes and followed up with a visit to discuss the project with my builder and to take accurate measurements. They confirmed the price and we placed the order just before Christmas 2025, taking delivery in the middle of March 2026, about eight weeks turnaround if you take out the Christmas period. The windows and doors are installed and I am delighted with them. They are substantial and elegant frames of excellent quality. The fitters were great and very charming; in fact all the people at City Homes are very charming and excellent communicators which really helps. I think the doors and windows are of excellent value and I got exactly what I wanted; triple glazed, thin elegant frames, affordability and value for money. The total price including fitting was under £8000.00. I would certainly highly recommend them. Dermot Hayes.Posted on Rosie GastonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Wonderful experience with the team from start to finish. They replaced 5 floor to ceiling window panels for us after damage caused by a fire. The installation and service was seamless. Great communication, constant updates on progress, and the guys were super efficient, hard working, respectful and tidy. They’ve done a fab job and we couldn’t be happier with both the process and the final product. Thank you!Posted on Philip WareTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
